![]() Physical characteristicsSize:?Males 65 to 70 cm (at the withers), females 61 to 68 cm. Body hight (at the withers) and length of the head are in proportion of 5:2 (i.e. a hight of 70 corresponds with a head length of 28 cm). Well sized males weigh 40 kg and more. The Beauceron has a muscular body with short, thick hair with sufficient undercoat. His basic color is black with reddish-brown insignia at the breast and legs as well as on the cheeks and eye-brows. There is a rare color variant "Harlekin" with grey spots on the black coat. A distinctive feature with the Beauceron is the double dew claw at the hind legs. One can distinguish two separate toes with one nail each. Since both are adhered at the bone there is no danger of injury. The nails, however, have to be clipped regularly since they do not wear out. The Beauceron's ears should start high up hanging down but not too close to the head. In the past often the ears were docked which today is forbidden in most countries. The eyes are dark brown, Harlekins can have multi-colored eyes.
